I've been meaning to write something here about how bad driving has become in the metromess. I don't know if it's because of the influx of Yankees we have down here now who have no idea what "drive friendly" means, or if it's just because people are just too wrapped up in their own lives and in too big of a hurry to live it! Last night my husband was run off the road by someone who never stopped...just moved over into Jim's lane and kept right on going. Never mind that Jim had to swerve into the oncoming lane of traffic so this "person" wouldn't hit him. Never mind that he hit the median, blew out two tires and broke a wheel. Never mind that Jim might have gotten hurt and needed medical attention. Never mind, never mind, never mind.

You know, life isn't always fair, and many people in this world think they don't have to take responsibility for their screw-ups. Maybe next time, it will be the other driver that gets run off the road and the driver that did it will just keep on driving....like nothing happened. Then he better hope he doesn't need medical attention or someone to call for help for him, because he'll be in the same boat he put my husband in.

Please be careful out there. You never know when some careless, non-caring driver will make you the next victim of their irresponsibility! Thankfully, Jim is okay and the car can be fixed (although it should be the other driver's insurance paying for the damages, not ours!). Don't drink and drive this New Year's -- don't risk your life or anyone else's. It's not worth it.

To the driver that ran my husband off the road...Happy New Year - if you keep driving like that, it may be the last one you see!

Now...on a lighter note regarding traffic in the metromess:

Driving in Dallas

First you must learn to pronounce the city name. It is DAL-LUS, or
DAA-LIS depending on if you live inside or outside LBJ Freeway.

Forget the traffic rules you learned elsewhere. Dallas has its own
version of traffic rules..."Hold on and pray". There is no such thing as
a dangerous high-speed chase in Dallas. We all drive like that.

All directions start with, "Get on Beltline"...which has no beginning
and no end. The morning rush hour is from 6 to 10. The evening rush hour is from 3
to 7.

Friday's rush hour starts Thursday morning.

If you actually stop at a yellow light, you will be rear ended, cussed
out and possibly shot. When you are the first one on the starting line,
count to five when the light turns green before going to avoid crashing
with all the drivers running the red light in cross-traffic.

Construction on Central Expressway is a way of life and a permanent
form of entertainment. We had had so-o-o much fun with that we have added
George Bush Freeway and the High Five to the mix.

All unexplained sights are explained by the phrase, "Oh, we're in Fort
Worth!"

If someone actually has their turn signal on, it is probably a factory
defect.

All old ladies with blue hair in Mercedes have the right of way. Period.

Inwood Road, Plano Road, NW Highway, East Grand, Garland Road,
Marsh Lane, Josey Lane, 15th Street, Preston Road... all mysteriously
change names as you cross intersections these are only a FEW examples

The perfect example is what is MOSTLY known as Plano Road. On the south end it is known as Lake Highlands Drive, cross Northwest Highway and it becomes Plano Road, go about 8 miles and it is briefly Greenville Ave, Ave K, and Highway 5. It ends in Sherman.

If asking directions in Irving or SE Dallas, you must have knowledge of
Spanish. If in central Richardson or on Harry Hines, Japanese or Chinese will be your best bet. If you stop to ask directions on Gaston or Live Oak, you better be armed.

A trip across town (east to west) will take a minimum of four hours,
although many north/south freeways have unposted minimum speeds of 75.

The minimum acceptable speed on the Dallas North Toll Road is 85.
Anything less is considered downright sissy.

The wrought iron on windows near Oak Cliff and Fair Park are not
ornamental.

It is possible to be driving WEST in the NORTH-bound lane of EAST
NORTHWEST highway. Don't let this confuse you.

The North Dallas Tollway is our daily version of NASCAR. It also ends
in Sherman....

LBJ is called "The Death Trap" for two reasons: "death" and "trap."

If it's 100 degrees, Thanksgiving must be next weekend.

If it's 10 degrees and sleeting/snowing, the Fort Worth Stock Show is
going on.

If it's rained 6 inches in the last hour, the Byron Nelson Golf Classic
is in the second round if it is Spring -- and it is the Texas State Fair
if it is Fall.

If you go to the Fair, pay the $5.00 to park INSIDE Fair Park. Parking
elsewhere could cost up to $2500 for damages, towing fees, parking
tickets, etc. If some guy with a flag tries to get you to park in his
'yard', run over him.

Any amusement parks, stadiums, arenas, race tracks, airports, etc. are
conveniently located as far away from EVERYTHING as possible so as to allow for ample parking on grassy areas.

If you need to ask for directions, get ALL the names of the street you
are being told to turn onto...we intermix numbers, letters & names for
the same roads.

If your Mapsco is more than a few weeks old, throw it out and buy a new
one.

Here's To The Holidays

Well, here it is less than a week before Christmas, and I'm still scrambling to finish my shopping, wrap gifts, finish the decorating and all the fun things that go along with Christmas. It's not unusual for me to be in this situation, as it happens almost every year. Christmas is a lot simpler these days than it used to be back when my son was little...or at least it is supposed to be. Now I have his two children (my beautiful grandchildren) to buy for which I really love to do. Even though their family doesn't celebrate Christmas in the traditional sense with a tree, gifts, etc., it doesn't keep me from buying them "I Love You" gifts this time of year and wrapping them up in all occasion paper instead of Christmas paper. They can't say no to that!

I found a "Chicken Dance Elmo" just by chance. It's loud and obnoxious, so I bought it. My one year old grandson will absolutely LOVE it, and his parents will HATE it. I don't know whose face I'm more excited about watching when this gift is opened, my grandson's or my son's. My kids will pay for not spending Thanksgiving OR Christmas with me. I don't get mad, I get even. ;) It's SO MUCH MORE FUN being a Nana than it is a Mama. You get to watch your kids go through what you've already experienced, and then you get to say those words they dread to hear...you know, the ones you dreaded hearing from your parents..."You pay for your raising".

There is some justice left in the world.

So here's to the holidays and I wish you all peace, love, happiness, and good health in the coming new year.

Cheers!

Old Man Winter

Old Man Winter
He’s blowing into town,
Rolling across the plains
With a mighty wind at his back.

Old Man Winter
He doesn’t really like us,
He just comes our way to
Remind us that He can.

Old Man Winter
He’s blowing into town,
They say he’s pretty angry
and throwing his weight around.

Old Man Winter
He’ll cut you to the bone,
With that cold north wind
That follows him alone.

Old Man Winter
It’s good to see you back,
How long will you be staying
Before we bid you farewell again.

Old Man Winter
Still strong as He can be,
Just hope he makes this visit short
And sets us Texans free.

Old Man Winter
Can you hear my plea?
Just take your friends and go away
And leave us Texans be!

"You Know Her"

Yeah, you know her,
You’ve met her before.
She stole your heart and
And then she ran away.

I can’t believe you don’t remember her
After the wild ride you had...
She introduced you to a feeling
And now she's moving on.

Yeah, you know her,
You’ve met her before.
She stole your heart
And then she ran away.

Now you're just standing there
Wondering where you went wrong,
She gives you a wink and a quick little laugh
Before she says "so long".

Yeah, you know her,
You’ve met her before.
She stole your heart
And then she ran away.

Don’t you remember what she said
Did she take your mind as well?
She said she’d last forever
So into her trap you fell.

Yeah, you know her,
You’ve met her before.
She stole your unsuspecting heart
And then she ran away.

Don’t worry too much about her now
She’ll come back some day, I'm sure.
And you’ll forget the pain you felt
For love, there is no cure.

Yeah, you know her,
You’ve met her before.
She stole your heart
And she stashed it away.

Yeah, you know her,
You've met her before,
And you will meet again,
Her name is "Love"...she has no cure.

December 2, 2002

This past weekend I got an e-mail from a friend who had created her own blog spot for her ramblings. I thought it was such a cool idea, I decided to create one for myself so I can come here and put down any thoughts, feelings, ramblings, etc. of my own. It will keep it off my main web site, but will be accessible to those who want to read it from my website.

I had a most special Thanksgiving weekend. With four days off, I was able to have Thanksgiving dinner with my sister, her beau and my niece. Later that night, some of my closest and oldest friends drove in from southeast Texas and spent the weekend. We went junkin' (flea markets), out for breakfast and did a lot of socializing while we listened to music and played games. The game "Aggrevation" has the most appropriate name as it is the most aggrevating game I've ever played.

Sunday I attended my grandson's first birthday party (nothing like a first birthday party...the birthday boy was quite bewildered by all the hooplah, but he sure did enjoy the cake). Then it was on to the next birthday party...Mike Kessell's 50th birthday celebration, where I met up with more friends who are part of my "music" family. I am truly blessed to have this group of people in my life.

I can't believe how fast this year has flown by. I've been in my new house for a year already! And I still love it. More than that, I love my neighbors who were responsible for me finding Cuervo Acres (that's where I live - "Little Cuervo Acres"). Dana and Andy live at Big Cuervo Acres with their three children, who have become my children as well, and I am very proud to call them "mine". It's nice knowing you have neighbors (more like family than neighbors) that you can call when you need a hand or a shoulder to cry on. Thanks, y'all, for being there for me.

I'm kind of excited to have a place to express my thoughts and feelings on a personal level. Stay tuned, because I think way too much most of the time.

Best regards,
Lana
